Betty's Life
Julie Haddrick 2000
100x75 cm
Hand dyed & painted fabric: machine pieced, hand and machine quilted
Stained glass applique technique.
This quilt, designed for and dedicated to Miss Betty Smith was commissioned
by her friends to celebrate her 80th Birthday in November 2000. In designing
this piece, I have sought to tell some of her story and to communicate
symbolically, many qualities that make Betty such a loved and very special
person. I have incorporated Victorian floral motifs in the design and
placed them around the focal point, the Cherry tree, which, as the symbol
of education, represents one of Betty’s lifelong interests. Soaring
above the tree is the dove, depicting the presence and power of God at
work in his people and the butterfly portrays eternal life. A summary
of the floral symbols is outlined on the quilt label.
