“HIBISCUS; DELICATE BEAUTY”
Hibiscus is an Oriental flowering plant that was much cherished in old
Chinese gardens. Now grown widely from warm temperate climates to the
tropical regions of the world, it has over 200 varieties and almost as
many colours. Illustrated here is Hibiscus rosa-sinesis, and a popular
colour choice with many, in particular, to teenage girls. The Hibiscus
is the floral emblem of Hawaii and as such is a popular symbol of the
surf cultures that flock there to relax, to holiday and to surf. Teenage
oriented clothing brands incorporate this popular flower into logos, fabric
prints, footwear, accessories and assorted products, always with instant
recognition and appeal. Interestingly, the hibiscus is described as a
“Delicate Beauty” in the Victorian era when symbols were used
in floral language. This is interesting as the teenage years are often
seen as a time of delicate beauty. This quilt is dedicated to all of the
teenage girls and delicate beauties who love Hibiscus.
